How to Store Your Motorcycle During Mongolia's Winter

Tips for properly storing your motorcycle through Mongolia's -40°C winters and preparing it for spring.

maintenancewintertips

Mongolia's winter is among the harshest in the world. Temperatures reaching -30°C to -40°C can cause serious damage to motorcycles. Proper storage ensures your bike is ready to ride when spring arrives.

Pre-Storage Preparation

1. Fuel System

  • Fill the tank completely and add fuel stabilizer (Sta-Bil brand recommended)
  • Run the engine for 5-10 minutes to circulate the stabilizer
  • If carbureted, close the fuel petcock and drain the carburetor bowl
  • 2. Oil Change

  • Old oil contains acids that corrode internal components, so change to fresh oil
  • Replace the oil filter at the same time
  • 3. Battery

  • Disconnect and store in a warm location
  • Connect a smart charger (Battery Tender)
  • Batteries left in extreme cold will be permanently damaged
  • 4. Tires

  • Inflate to recommended pressure
  • If possible, lift the motorcycle to keep tires off the ground
  • If stored on the ground, move the bike slightly each month to prevent flat spots
  • 5. Exterior Protection

  • Wash, dry, and apply corrosion-inhibiting spray
  • Plug the exhaust pipe to prevent moisture and insects from entering
  • Cover the air intake
  • Storage Conditions

  • A warm, dry garage is ideal (above 0°C / 32°F)
  • Use a breathable cover (not plastic)
  • Avoid direct sunlight
  • Spring Preparation

    1. Reconnect and charge the battery

    2. Check the fuel system

    3. Change oil and filters

    4. Check tire pressure

    5. Inspect the brake system

    6. Test lights and signals
