US Motorcycle Auctions: How to Get a Great Deal

How to buy from Copart, IAAI, Mecum, and other auctions — advantages, risks, and what to watch for.

auctionbuyingguide

US motorcycle auctions offer an excellent opportunity to buy motorcycles at below-dealer prices. However, without understanding how auctions work, there are real risks involved.

Types of Auctions

Salvage Auctions (Copart, IAAI)

Insurance companies sell damaged motorcycles here. Prices are very low, but repairs are needed. Some have minor damage while others need full rebuilds.

Dealer Auctions (Manheim)

Dealers trade motorcycles among themselves. Most bikes are in good condition. Private buyers cannot participate directly — licensed dealers only.

Collector Auctions (Mecum, Bonhams)

Classic and rare motorcycles. Prices are higher but quality is excellent.

Steps to Participate

Register— Create an account on Copart or IAAI
Research— Review photos, condition reports, and VIN history
Set a max bid— Factor in shipping, customs, and repair costs to set your ceiling
Place bids— Online or in person
Pay— Winners must pay within 48 hours

Watch Out For

Clean title vs Salvage title:Salvage title bikes are 30-60% cheaper but require additional inspection for Mongolian registration
Mileage accuracy:Some auctions don't guarantee odometer readings
Hidden damage:Damage not visible in photos may exist
